What a DevOps hire really costs

The job ad says one salary. The invoice says otherwise: months of searching, one person expected to cover five specialties, and everything resting on their shoulders the day they finally start.

The sticker price is the small part

A capable DevOps engineer in Europe runs a healthy six-figure package once you count salary, charges, tooling and the recruiter's cut. That is the visible number. The invisible ones matter more: the role commonly takes months to fill, and while the seat is empty your deploys stay scary, your cloud bill drifts, and your product engineers keep doing infrastructure work badly and slowly, at their salary.

Then comes ramp-up. Even a strong hire spends their first months learning your stack before the leverage arrives.

One hire cannot cover the surface

The title says DevOps. The workload says five jobs: CI/CD, Kubernetes, cloud architecture, security, observability. Each is a specialty with its own failure modes. One person covers two of them well, the rest on best effort, and best effort is what pages you at 3am.

The quiet costs nobody budgets

• The bus factor. One infrastructure person means every vacation is a freeze and every resignation is a crisis.
• The bottleneck. All platform decisions queue behind one calendar.
• The mismatch. Most teams have two or three days a week of real platform work. A full-time hire either invents work or absorbs product tickets, and both erode the role.

When a hire is the right call

There is a real threshold: when platform work fills several people's weeks, when compliance demands in-house ownership, when infrastructure is your product. Then hire, and hire well. Most companies between seed and Series B are not there yet. They need the coverage, not the headcount.

The honest alternative
